Previous winners of Miss Pole Dance Australia include Felix Cane, who now tours the world with Cirque Du Soleil and Cleo The Hurricane, a star attraction at a huge cabaret show in Berlin.

Competitors can still wear skimpy costumes and big heels - and the very good ones can also land roles in the circus and burlesque theatre - but the costume stays on. ‘‘More and more women are getting into it, and it isn’t just the younger women, either, butWomen in their 50s and 60s are also working out in the gyms.’’ The old stigma which connected pole dancing only to seedy strip clubs, is fading. ‘‘It has moved on from just being a form of fitness, because pole dance is now a popular sporting competition, including next week’s NSW Championships and the Australian Championships. ‘‘Already we have thousands of women across the state training, either to just get fit or to compete at both state and national level,’’ she said(there was even a world championship held in Hong Kong last year). Heats for Miss Pole Dance Australia are being held around the country in August (NSW on August 2 at Sydney’s Factory Theatre) and winners are flown to Sydney for the Australian final on November 9.
